i need some help in my singing. I'm currently taking lessons but what I am trying to work on isn't working! I try to do my deep breathing before each phrase in the song so I have power in my voice but it comes out sounding all strained and "held back". Any tips?

If it sounds strained then it's probably because you are tensing or trying too hard. You should discuss this issue with your teacher but some problems are resolved with time and practice which may be the case for you.

Make sure you relax before you practice - there are lots of tips and advice for singers at our parent site http://www.vocalist.org.uk
and you can post singing related queries at
http://www.singing-teachers.co.uk
community discussion forums.

Hope this helps

some general tips:-
  • Warm Up Before You Sing
  • Drink Plenty of Water and stay hydrated - caffeine dehydrates the body !
  • Choose songs that fit your voice and dont stretch your range
  • choose a song you know!
  • Take a Rest and try to avoid shouting when at a venue!
